Asphalt Shingle
Asphalt shingle roofing in Fort Worth and the DFW area
Asphalt shingles are on more houses in DFW than everything else combined. They're affordable, they install fast, they come in every color imaginable, and the modern dimensional styles look nothing like the flat 3 tab roofs you remember from the 90s. For most North Texas homeowners, the real choice isn't asphalt vs. something else, it's which tier of asphalt makes the most sense for the house and the budget.
What it is
Asphalt shingles are overlapping rectangular roofing tiles made from a fiberglass mat, coated in asphalt for waterproofing, and finished with ceramic mineral granules for UV protection. They come in three tiers, and the difference between them matters more than most people think.
3-tab: The original, flat, single-layer style. Cheapest option and still occasionally used on rentals and budget replacements. Thinner, shorter lifespan, less visual depth.
Architectural (dimensional/laminated): The current standard for new installs in DFW. Double-layered for thickness and shadow-line depth, longer warranties, more color options, and usually the best value for the money.
Designer/premium: Heavier, thicker, often designed to mimic slate or shake. Longest warranties in the asphalt category and the most curb appeal, but the price gets close to entry-level metal.
Best for
Most single-family homes in the DFW area. If you're not sure what's right for your house, this is almost always the starting point.
Single-family homes and suburban neighborhoods
Homeowners who want a solid mix of cost, performance, and look
HOA-compliant replacements (virtually all HOAs approve architectural shingles)
Quick replacements and insurance claim work
Key features
A few things that make asphalt shingles the default for most DFW homes.
Available in Class 4 impact-rated versions that qualify for insurance discounts
Wide range of colors, styles, and dimensional looks
Fast installation — most homes are done in 1-3 days
Works on steep and complex roof shapes
Backed by real manufacturer warranties from name brands (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, Malarkey, etc.)
Material composition
Simple in concept, well-engineered in practice.
Fiberglass mat base for strength and dimensional stability
Asphalt coating for waterproofing
Ceramic-coated mineral granules on top for UV protection and color
Estimated lifespan
DFW heat is harder on asphalt than most climates. Realistic ranges:
3-tab shingles: 15-20 years
Architectural shingles: 20-30 years
Designer/premium shingles: 30-40 years
Attic ventilation makes a bigger difference than most homeowners realize. A poorly ventilated attic can cut 5-10 years off the top end.
Cost range
Installed cost varies by tier and by job complexity.
3-tab: $3.50 – $4.50 per sq. ft.
Architectural: $4.50 – $7.50 per sq. ft.
Designer/premium: $7.00 – $10.00 per sq. ft.
Class 4 impact-rated upgrade: usually adds $0.75 – $1.50 per sq. ft. on top of the base tier
The insurance premium discount from going Class 4 often recovers part of that cost over the life of the roof.
Maintenance needs
Asphalt is low-maintenance, but low-maintenance isn't no-maintenance.
Annual or post-storm inspections for lifted, cracked, or missing shingles
Gutter cleaning twice a year to prevent water backup at the eaves
Replacing damaged or wind-lifted shingles promptly before water gets in
Clearing debris, tree limbs, and anything that holds moisture on the surface
Visual style
More variety than any other material, by a wide margin.
Flat 3-tab for a clean, uniform look
Architectural/dimensional for depth, shadow lines, and curb appeal
Designer shingles that mimic slate, shake, or tile
Granular, matte finish that holds up to UV
Warranty options
Most premium manufacturers offer real warranty programs if the install is done by a certified contractor.
Standard architectural warranty: 25-50 years (limited, prorated)
Most architectural lines come with a limited lifetime warranty when installed by a certified contractor
Workmanship warranty (separate from manufacturer): typically covered by your roofing contractor — CWT offers 15 years
Installation time
One of the faster materials to install cleanly.
Most residential homes: 1-3 days
Weather-dependent — we don't install in active rain or extreme wind
Environmental impact
Honest answer: asphalt isn't the greenest option.
Petroleum-based and not biodegradable
Old shingles can be recycled into paving material in some areas
If environmental impact matters to you, metal, synthetic, or solar are better choices
Fire and weather ratings
The ratings that matter most in North Texas.
Class A fire rating (highest rating available)
Wind resistance of 110-130 mph with proper nailing and starter strip installation
Class 4 impact resistance available — this is the upgrade we recommend for almost every DFW customer
Available colors and styles
Easier to list what isn't available. Every major manufacturer offers dozens of colors across multiple style lines.
Colors: Charcoal, black, weathered wood, driftwood, slate gray, hickory, sandalwood, and many more — most manufacturers have 20+ options per line
Styles: 3-tab, architectural (dimensional), designer/luxury, specialty blends
Texture: Flat (3-tab), shadow-line dimensional, wood-shake simulation, slate simulation
